Southern Royal Albatross
Cambell Island, Southern Ocean

Campbell Island is home to 99% of all Southern Royal Albatrosses, estimated at 9,000 pairs. They spend 95% of their lives at sea, flying 90% of the time they are over water. Based on satellite tracking, they travel from 200-500 miles a day and do not hesitate to fly 1,000 plus miles for food. They routinely circumnavigate the entire Antarctic continent, flying a route that takes them to South America, Africa, Australia and then back to Campbell Island.

It has been estimated that a 50-year-old Albatross has traveled a minimum of 3.8 million miles. Hard to believe, but since returning Mal has done research, and these figures are well documented.
